Barracuda fry
In the video you can see some small “Barracudas of the Mediterranean” Sphyraena viridensis. The presence of this species was once confined to a narrow basin of the eastern Atlantic (Cape Verde, Canary Islands and Azores), today we can find it practically everywhere in the Mediterranean Sea. It is probably another sign of the tropicalization of the Mediterranean Sea. These specimens have been filmed in Sardinia, but this species has also become common in the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Ligurian Sea.
The rise in the temperature of the waters of mare nostrum (southernization of the Mediterranean) has in fact created an ideal environment for the species, which has quickly spread to the point where it is now commonly referred to as Mediterranean barracuda, often confusing it with the only other sphirenide present in our waters, the sea pike (Sphyraena sphyraena), from which however the preoperculum devoid of scales, the characteristic vertical bands and the decidedly greater dimensions differentiate it.
