The Mediterranean Cardinalfish, or the King of Mullets (Apogon imberbis), belongs to the class Osteichthyes, subclass Actinopterygii, order Perciformes, suborder Percoidei, family Apogonidae.

It is a cute little orange-red fish that does not exceed 15 cm in length, the body is short and rather robust, with a wide head. The eyes and the mouth are particularly large while the teeth are small and pointed; the eyes are crossed by two lighter horizontal stripes.

The King of Mullets we find in the Mediterranean Sea and in the Atlantic in the Azores and Canary Islands, lives in rocky areas rich in caves and crevasses at a depth ranging from 10 to 200 meters, usually hidden inside small caves.
