Distribution and habitat

Butterflyfishes are part of the coral reef and prefer tropical and subtropical seas where they are widespread in the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans.They are generally diurnal and prefer shallow water (usually up to 18 meters, although some species have been reported even at a depth of 180 meters) At night they hide among the madrepores and can take on a different color of the skin.

Description
Butterfly fish are so called because they are distinguished by a colorful livery, with horizontal, vertical or diagonal bands or spots, similar to those found on the wings of butterflies. The mouth is generally extended forward. The dorsal fin is unique and composed of 6 to 16 spines. The anal fin is usually composed of 3 spines and the caudal fin can have a round or truncated shape, but never forked.
The dimensions are modest and between 12 and 22 cm. The specimen that reaches the largest size is the Chaetodon lineolatus, which can reach 30 cm when adult.
