Pesci Fucilieri - Caesionidae

Caesionidae (Fusilier Fishes) are a family of bony fish belonging to the order Perciformes, known as riflefishes. This family is endemic to the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific Ocean, in the tropical areas.
They are also present in the Red Sea. They live in coastal waters, near the coral reefs, where they frequent the open waters above the reefs. www.intotheblue.it Pesci Fucilieri Caesionidae fusiliers fishes

Description
The Caesionidae are phylogenetically close to the Lutjanidae with respect to which they show a certain adaptation to a pelagic lifestyle and to a planctofaga feeding. These fish have a poorly compressed oval body on the sides, fusiform. The mouth is small but can extend to a tube to capture prey. The dorsal fin is unique, with the front part with spiny rays. The anal fin has 3 spiny rays. The pectoral and ventral fins are of medium size. The caudal fin is deeply forked and is carried by a rather thin caudal peduncle. The color is lively, usually the base is bright blue with dark bands and stripes and golden, yellow and sometimes red spots. Often the apices of the caudal fin lobes are dark. The dimensions rarely exceed 40 cm.
Biology
They are diurnal, gregarious fish, which are used to hunt in large banks. At night they take refuge in the cracks of the corals.
Supply
They feed exclusively on zooplancton. www.intotheblue.it Pesci Fucilieri Caesionidae fusiliers fishes
